GLOBAL WARMING?
I'm from Rochester originally, but have lived in the Utica-Rome area since around 1973. Came with my ex-husband and two sons. Got divorced in '79. Took a job with New York State in 1980, and had to move to Auburn for 3 years, before I could transfer back here. Been living in Rome since 2000. Retired in 2003.
It was extraordinarily cold in Spokane for the several days and nights. (Global warming, you know.) I planned ahead, bought everything I need before the frigid temps arrived. Going to get above freezing today, but we’ll probably have rain on top of the snow.
Yikes! I guess I shouldn't complain about being stuck in a hotel with a bed to sleep in.
I was born and raised in Rochester, N.Y. I remember we had a terrible snowstorm sometime in the early 60's. All the main streets were closed. There was so much snow on our street, they had to bring loaders and dump trucks to take the snow away. There was no way you could drive your car. We didn't have a car anyway, but the buses weren't running either, so we couldn't get to work. There was no mail delivery. It lasted about 3 days.
My father worked for the NY Central Railroad, and he had to walk to the station instead of taking the bus. He was always out working on the tracks during snowstorms. He was a track foreman and had a crew. They inspected the tracks, made what repairs they could, and had to clear their section of tracks when snowstorms hit. He'd come home at 4 p.m., eat, go to bed, then get up to go back out at midnight, and work until 4 p.m. the next day. This went on his whole career.

I was from a small town on Lake Erie a few miles south of Buffalo. 1950- 1970. Stories like yours were common. When they closed the Thruway, travelers would be directed off to our town. Sometimes they’d sleep in our church.
Then I lived in Alaska for 20 years. Buffalo was SO much worse!
I can believe it. Buffalo just got sacked with snow, and had to cancel the game with the Steelers last Saturday, and reschedule to Monday. I saw an article last weekend, that the Bills were looking for volunteers to shovel snow to get the arena ready for last Monday's game.
My weather app showed deep freeze warnings in corpus christi tx. A few days ago.
Yeah, y’all are used to this up there! It hurts us down here when we get a hard hit like this. LOL!
At least in TN there are road salters and snow plows but they’re primarily used on highways. In larger cities, they’ll do streets downtown and such. The rest of us are stuck at home.
Even an inch of snow will keep me home. I don’t want my car slammed into by someone who has no clue how to drive in snow. Best to stay out of harm’s way and keep the car dent-free. :-)
This hit bothers me mentally more than anything because it’s lasting so long. I’m bored out of my mind! There’s only so much housework to do to occupy time. LOL
If you had a terminal disease and happened to die when it was zero degrees out, why then, your death would get attributed to cold weather and be part of the “butcher’s bill” in the screaming and hysterical MSM headlines regarding the current arctic blast.
I’ve been in since Monday too. They don’t clear anything but the highways here. But stockpile to a degree and have plenty of food for myself and the cats so that’s not a problem. I did get a little extra cat litter and some milk to get through til Monday because I knew I wasn’t going anywhere once the snow arrived.
The worst part was missing out on a couple of things I was looking forward to this week. A meeting Thursday and right now I should be at the military museum with a couple of large groups that had scheduled tours. I was reeeeeeally looking forward to that. The two groups are disappointed, too, but they’ll reschedule.
At least there’s another group scheduled for next Saturday to look forward to and the weather will be better.
Just gotta get through these next two days and FREEDOM! LOL

But I’d read, a week or so ago, about the insanely cold temps in the Arctic and figured that cold was going to have to bust out eventually. Did it ever!!!! LOL
That’s mighty cold for y’all that far south. Things are probably not set up as well for cold weather as they are here. We do get cold but not THIS cold for THIS long very often, thank goodness!
They forgot to mention that the Arctic Ice is increasing this year, so I guess Gore was wrong about no Arctic Ice by 2014?
I must have missed his apology for his Polar Bear scare. Hey! that phrase would work in a song or a limerick. Go for it.

We have plenty of canned food for them, but they are accustomed to open feeding kibble 24/7. I ordered some last week from Amazon but there have been no deliveries. Getting low on litter, but have enough.
Pretty much, the novelty has worn off and I’ve had enough. Highway departments stink on ice (no pun intended) around here.
I don’t do anything financial online. I just do my own shopping and have it on hand immediately that way. I’ve also been stockpiling so always have plenty of dry and canned cat food in the garage. With 22 cats, I can’t take a chance of running out of food when there’s a long spell of no food on the shelves, which happens occasionally. This time last year, there was no dry food to be found for weeks.
I don’t stay too far ahead on the litter because I don’t have the space but am good for another week at the moment.
I don’t think much of anyone’s made deliveries this week unless to an area that’s had treated roads. The mail hasn’t been running either. I finally got mail yesterday but it wasn’t my usual carrier who showed up.
The novelty wore off Monday night. Snow’s pretty to look at as long as it’s a photo or a video of SOMEWHERE ELSE! LOL
