A deadly Arctic blast will continue sweeping across the U.S. on Monday and linger through at least midweek, subjecting nearly 100 million Americans to weather warnings while prolonging a bitter cold that has killed four people already, including an Oregon woman who died when a fire spread from an open-flame stove after a tree fell on to her RV.
In the Dakotas and Montana, forecasters predict a wind chill of minus 70, which can cause frostbite almost instantly. Officials have implored members of the public to remain home. Similar temperatures will be felt from the Northern Rockies all the way to Kansas. In the northeast, blinding snow has brought the region to an almost standstill.
In Buffalo, New York where snowfall of 1 to 2 feet was forecast, severe conditions saw thundersnow - a bizarre phenomenon in which thunder and lightning occur during a snowstorm.
The weather system threatens to further disrupt daily life, including an NFL playoff game and the first-in-the-nation presidential nominating contest in Iowa.
In the Hawkeye State, the wind chill will leave temperatures feeling testing the hardiness of caucusgoers willing to brave the deep chill on Monday.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, a Buffalo native, posted a video on X, formerly known as Twitter, showing near-whiteout condition ahead of the Bills playoff clash with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
'Conditions right now in Orchard Park, where the game would have started moments ago,' she wrote early Sunday afternoon. 'No visibility and dangerously high winds.'
The Bills invited diehard fans to help dig out snow-filled Highmark Stadium, offering $20 an hour for their labor.
'We made progress shoveling, but not much at all,' said Logan Eschrich, a storm chaser who made his way to Buffalo and pitched in.

I was riding my bicycle once, trying to outrun a storm that popped up. It was a whopper.
I don’t know how close the lightning hit to me but I heard the ground sizzle. Yikes
We turned into a subdivision and right into someone’s open garage.
Got to love that global warming.
Four die from COVID as killer Arctic freeze grips America
I grew up in Orchard Park, home of the Buffalo Bills, about three miles from the stadium.
I could not believe they were going to build another stadium right across the street from the existing one without a ROOF.
First of all they should have moved the stadium either up to the city or north of the city. The lake effect snow belt literally starts just a few miles north of Orchard Park in West Seneca.
There are many times when the city of Buffalo would get a dusting or a small amount of snow and Orchard Park and south down the PA border would get multiple feet of snow.
Lake effect snow is very impressive. It is not unusual to go to bed with bare ground and wake up with 2’ overnight.
The difference between Toronto and Buffalo are so huge you can not even compare the two cities. Buffalo, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Detroit and so many rust belt cities were crushed in the 1970s by imports and unions. 25M people worked at Bethlehem Steel in Lackawanna, NY.
Yet, right across the border in Hamilton, ONT(between Niagara Falls and Toronto)they still make steel. At least they did a few years ago. They still have many other manufacturing operations. NAFTA and the UNIONS absolutely crushed manufacturing in the USA.
:) petty sure ‘feel’ is not the right word.
For the money they make, the fricking players should be the ones shoveling snow.
Required an under garment change, I assume.
It is when it thunders during a snow storm. Think thunderstorm while snowing instead of raining. We get it here in western NC every winter.
“Toronto is 100 miles away and has property prices that are 5x of Buffalos”
Who cares? I’d rather live in Buffalo than anywhere in Canada.

I hate sportsball. American men are not interested in politics because they have their gay TV soaps opera called sports ball
Back in the day, American men could be interested in both.
It’s January.
But our dumbed-down populace thinks it’s all part of carbon-caused climate change.
Ditto. I’ve heard it a few times..
It's a snowstorm with some thunder. It happens when the snow storm is fairly intense. It's not rare at all.
The January 1977 snows was so cold it was used as proof we were entering THE COMING ICE AGE!
I read yesterday that scientists have “proven” that the cold weather this month is proof the world is heating up.
No, but close.
Oh noes! We might not make it 7 1/2 more years u til the end of life as we know it! 4 people died! I’m gonna hunker down, wear several masks, social distance and hope the killer cold doesn’t get me /s
It should be “Snow-thunder” which is just thunder during a nowstorm
