The Nationalist Party of China (KMT) – the party which Beijing prefers – has conceded defeat in the Taiwanese elections.
With well over half of the votes counted, Taiwan’s ruling party is set to declare victory in their presidential elections.
It is a setback for China, which views the Democratic Progressive Party as dangerous separatists.
The DPP’s candidate, Taiwanese Vice-President Lai Ching-te, is in the lead with 40.5 per cent of the vote, and is due to speak to the gathered press at 8:30pm (local time).
He is followed by KMT candidate Hou Yu-ih with 33.3 per cent, and TPP candidate Ko Wen-je with 26.2 per cent.
If you combine TPP and KMT they add up to Over 50%. Are both of these parties more favorable to Chine than the winning party?
Do they have a runoff between to top two or does a plurality become the winner?
Top vote getter wins.
The take home here is how they finished voting and immediately counted all the votes in view of everyone.
Completely open and transparent. Anyone could watch the votes being counted.
Winner was known within a couple hours.
In reality, none are particularly favorable to the Chicoms.
I think of the three the KMT is the most “favorable” but it’s not at a treasonous level. I think they more or less want the “status quo “.
Yes.
A lot of it is give Chicoms face.
