We did and have let "Americans rot in prison"; it has always depended on how much interest the United States had in the individual, what crimes they are accused of, and how much we were willing to risk/pay to get them out.

How many Americans are being held in nations around the world, rotting in their cells - right now?

How many have we heard of and how many are just going to stay there in Myanmar, Turkey, Russia, China, Thailand, Iran and elsewhere?

How many will never be heard from again?

These days lots.

Dad, Marine, WWII, China, Korea, and Vietnam told me we didn’t used to let Americans rot in foreign jails.

Do I believe him with 22½ years in the USMC or you with 27 years?

Either way, I understand your career sacrifices and vastly appreciate your service.
