That’s how we learned it, too, in my little NY State school. Almost never hear it anymore, though.

This used to be "normal"! I never knew ANYONE, anywhere, who didn't use "shall" correctly; not from the smallest child to the oldest person.

We also had vocabulary words to learn, from third grade through high school, which was the norm, from the worst schools through the elite boarding schools. Sadly, that's no longer the case, not even in THE best of the nest schools.
