I shook hands with Bush (41) in a totally by accident situation.
I was going fishing in an unknown (to most) creek that was on base behind the flightline on an AF base with a buddy of mine.
We were both wearing a tank-top and jams (those almost knee length shorts that were in fashion back then), and each of us had a 6-pack of beer in one hand, and a fishing-pole in the other.
We noticed it was a bit busy, leading up to the flightline, but were chatting about something, or other (probably girls, of course), until we reached the area of the flighting to go around and go through the tree-line (very thick but narrow woods), but were stopped by the SS, and guided to Bush (41).
Both of us ended up shaking his hand carrying a 6-pack and a fishing pole!
Found out that he had landed there to go play golf on our on base golf course o.O
(Can’t remember if that was the same fishing expedition that we had gone on when I tossed the line and sinker in that creek, aiming to hit below a log, but hit the log.. and the log started swimming toward me REAL fast, I dropped everything I had and I don’t even remember touching the ground, I was going so fast. Probably broke a few world records, lol. Went back the next day to collect what I had dropped X-D)
I met GHW Bush in Kennbunkport, ME. This was the summer after he lost to Clinton. I had spent the night on my father in law sail boat on this marina in the river. Bush’s Scarab speed boat was right next to our sailboat on the dock. What was more impressive was the 28’ hard bottomed center consoled Zodiac that the Secret Service had.
He came down in the morning with the SS boys. He shook our hands and was on his way. He was with another guy with a long beard(like ZZ top beard). He came back up the river a couple hours later with a whole crew on his boat. Turns out the guys with him in the boat were the Oak Ridge Boys.
