San Francisco Rejects 26 Candidates’ Chinese Names for March Ballot

Twenty-six candidates running for office in San Francisco in March won’t be able to use their preferred Chinese names on the city’s bilingual ballots, officials have decided.

The Department of Elections told The Standard that 26 candidates, most of whom are not ethnically Chinese, failed to provide adequate documentation to prove that they were either born with the name or have been using the name for at least two years—as required by state law.

So I'm going to try to understand this, so a candidate named Robert, wants to be named Roberto, on the Spanish ballot, but according to the election law, his real first name Robert must be used.

It's funny how libs use cultural appropriation for their own means.

There should NOT be bi-lingual ballots. It’s obscene.

There should not be party affiliation on ballots, either.

-Sum Ting Wong
- Wi Tu Lo
- Ho Lee Fuk
- Bang Ding Ow

Maybe they could use the above names. For anyone who doesn’t know, just search the names above and KTVU in San Francisco.

But, if he's a dude, xy and has a penis, he can say that he's a woman and be called Roberta.

That's all good, in clown world.

William Jeffrrson Blythe would not like this. Nor would Barry Soreto.

It is a confusing problem, when it need not be so confusing.
There are several different kinds of Chinese speakers in San Francisco. They may need to be like the English speakers, and chose one version of the language and spelling that will be acceptable to the majority, if for business purposes only.

It’s expensive and impractical to try printing up different election material up for each and every Chinese variation.
Even most Spanish readers seem to have accepted the current version of Spanish now being used in most material for the public.

It’s similar to the WKRP Thanksgiving commercial, as god is my witness, I thought turkeys could fly. Every Thanksgiving I have to watch it.

A little bit of local color on this... the Chinese-name ballot listing has long been a playground for cynical politicians to come up with a series of Chinese characters that is very loosely pronounced like their first and/or last names but has a very positive meaning, e.g., “Mary Anderson” might brew up a series of characters that sound something like “Mei Lee Ong Dong Sung” but mean “Good luck prosperity lady.” (Not an actual example, as I don’t know Chinese, but that’s the game that’s played)

Very true. Monty Python did a skit about this in the movie "The Life of Brian".

One of the greatest trolls of the drive-by media ever, and kudos to the FAA employee who caught on to it and confirmed the names.

Basically, Chinese uses one set of ideograms for all dialects, which works because the picture is not related to any specific sound.
