The USA managed to provoke a country 5000 miles away into attacking. When the USA could have just stayed the hell out of it !

No they could have left Asia for the Asians to sort out. Instead of economic sanctions that provoked (and in my view were designed to force or provoke) a Japanese attack.
And they could have left Europe for the europeans to sort out.
