Billionaires and business leaders are arguing over whether DEI efforts should exist.
Bill Ackman and Elon Musk say diversity, equity, and inclusion programs are "racist."
It's the abbreviation that has billionaire bigwigs pretty worked up — and it's not AI.
The talk about DEI — diversity, equity, and inclusion — isn't about how to jumpstart efforts that once seemed almost universally lauded. It's about what's next for these programs following attacks on DEI by several high-wattage names in business.
Billionaire investor Bill Ackman, who became a vocal critic of how Harvard handled antisemitic rhetoric on campus, is now targeting DEI. In a post on X this week following the resignation of Harvard President Claudine Gay, Ackman said he believes DEI is "the root cause of antisemitism at Harvard," his alma mater. The debate didn't end there. Elon Musk went after fellow billionaire Mark Cuban for his support of DEI efforts. Cuban, in a post on X, wrote that "there are people of various races, ethnicities, orientation, etc that are regularly excluded from hiring consideration." Musk replied that DEI was "just another word for racism."
And, in the case of the attacks on Harvard, Sonnenfeld said communication failures by the university's governing board left an opening for critics of Gay to make the issue about DEI rather than her testimony before Congress over hate speech on campus and on subsequent accusations of plagiarism in some of her work.
"They left a vacuum there for people to fill with this stuff — with this DEI explanation. And what does that do?" Sonnenfeld said. "It horribly discredits some of the finest educators this country has."
And there are signs that some companies are pulling back from their work around diversity, in some cases because there are indicators it's not been all that effective.

The only thing DEI does is promote people based on liberal fashionable interests and not competency. It basically builds a hegemony to keep the top dogs in place, while they put less talented and able people just below them so they cannot be challenged.
That’s the intent.
LOLz and BS!! DEI is pushed by some of the most racist, talentless turds in Academia. By lazy overpaid hacks.
It's an employment program for blacks, and to exclude whites from jobs. In some cases, NE Asians get excluded too.
DEI is a brainwashing conformist making movement. Can you find a Harvard administrator who will publicly criticize it? Or an administrator at other top universities.
The ones who have misgivings will have their careers ruined by this black racist movement. That self-hating white libs give great energies + $$$$ to.
That is true, but I believe the real purpose is to prevent those at the top from having the place in society threatened by up and comers.
It’s easy to prevent if those capable of replacing you were kept at the third rung, while the less capable were artificially placed at the second run and the more capable on the third rung have to somehow get past those on the second run who will not be interested being displaced by those more capable then themselves.
You’re missing the sexual orientation aspect of DIE! In the DIE agenda there is a checkbox for sexual deviants. They are being promoted above competent individuals because of their sexual preference. It is not about race exclusively. It is about destroying the whole system.
How were companies successful before?
Boeing is a big supporter of DEI.
Unfortunately, Boeing brand new jetliners are too dangerous to ride in. Pieces of them come off in flight.
The FAA believes in DEI. Today’s air traffic controllers are NOT competent enough to maintain safe airliner separation as airliners are being reported dangerously close to colliding far more frequently in America today.
United Airlines demands its future pilots are at least 50% minority or women. A United jet was nearly destroyed this past year from a dangerously incompetent pilot who should never have been at the controls. United is desperately hiding the details of that incident from the public.
Hiring and promotion on MERIT is the ONLY way to avoid the suicide of a nation.
COMPETENCY is the ONLY way to preserve society.
We MUST demand our operating room surgeons are the very BEST at their skills or we will be killing people in operating rooms who need not die.
DEI is destroying all public trust in “leaders” in charge in America today.
For sure DEI hiring slants towards hiring gays, trans, females, blacks, other minorities. Straight white men are 100% aced out. When it was heterosexual white men who conceived of America and put it all together. With some black labor included.
heterosexual white men are who fought and died in all our wars. Though post-Vietnam this has changed a bit.
Why send everyone to MSN?
Companies need DEI like a feminist needs a bicycle riding fish.
Mediocrity breeds mediocrity. <—- doing such is government mandated
“How were companies successful before?”
... a very good question to pose to any wokester who is prattling on about the merits of DIE. Of course most lefties think history began the day they were born so they don’t know anything about US Steel, Standard Oil, NCR, IBM, and the hundreds of small, medium, large, and huge businesses that became successful without the support of DIE, CRT, and most other leftist crap.
@spit3
I’d call them DEI flacks instead of experts. I don’t see DEI as being something that requires expertise.
How about we just hire people based solely on merit and let the chips fall where they may.
Someone should look into the backgrounds of these experts and their consulting groups...
Especially the latter.
BCG is particularly interesting...
Oh lookie, the billionth “experts say” article. It’s so old.
Republicans want to ban throwing puppies into wood chippers but it’s actually good for society, experts say.
