The “progressives” are radicals who are trying to dismantle all elements of Western civilization, while the old liberals always felt that they were being true to Western civilization. The two camps really don’t see eye to eye at all.
Now the liberal philosophy has a problem: old-fashioned liberalism wasn’t really true to Western civilization, in that it had within it the seed that was destined to sprout into radical wokeism. But the liberals don’t recognize this and still object to the explicitly radical transformation of their party.
