A year ago, a resolute President Volodymyr Zelensky traveled direct from the battlefield of Bakhmut to address the US Congress and meet with President Joe Biden. He was feted as a hero; Ukraine’s determination to resist Russian aggression met with strong bipartisan backing in Washington.
One year on, the outlook looks much grimmer. A long-anticipated Ukrainian offensive in the south has made scant progress. Russia appears to have weathered international sanctions, for now, and has converted its economy into a war machine.
The Russian way of war, absorbing hideous losses of men and materiel but throwing yet more into the fight, has blunted the Ukrainian military’s tactical and technological edge, as its top general admitted in a candid essay last month.
The mood in Moscow seems grimly determined: the goals of the “special military operation” will be achieved, and the fighting will continue until they are.

It’s pretty obvious Russia had been preparing for a war such as this for many years.
We were told they were down to fighting with shovels and taking computer chips out of kitchen appliances to make weapons. That wasn’t exactly true.

My father worked at aircraft factory in WWII. They brought a captured Japanese Zero fighter plane to show how badly they were made, rivets not put in right, and how their ships were just junk. But, these people knew when the things had been doctored to make it look like the enemy was incompetent. He asked: “If these planes are so bad, how come they shoot down so many of our warplanes?” Feel good propaganda can be toxic, if believed.
The Japanese Zero was the premier fighter plane in the Pacific Theater until 1943 when the US F6 Hellcat showed up.

The former Democrat Party supported the communist north by cutting off almost all war-making supplies...
Now, as the Communist Party that replaced the Democrat Party, they repeat their successful strategies...
