Serial California Shoplifter to Stand Trial After 90 Arrests

The man from the Bay Area will stand trial this week after a county DA's office filed a complaint against him—consolidating 31 misdemeanors from the past year.

A serial shoplifter from the Bay Area who has been arrested 90 times will be put to trial this week after the Contra Costa District Attorney’s office filed a complaint against him—consolidating 31 misdemeanors from the past year.

Jesse Leonardo Otero, 44, is well-known by Bay Area businesses and law enforcement for his frequent shoplifting and arrests, local news outlet KRON reported. Mr. Otero was released Dec. 8 from the Martinez Detention Facility on misdemeanor charges, according to KRON. But just a few hours later, he was arrested outside a Pleasant Hill shopping center.

He is homeless and sustains a drug addiction through shoplifting and selling stolen goods, according to media reports.

Despite his extensive criminal record, Mr. Otero avoids lengthy jail sentences because most shoplifting offenses are now classified as misdemeanors if the stolen merchandise amounts to less than $950.

Because of this, police departments are compelled to issue citations rather than detain Mr. Otero despite his repeated criminal history.

His latest arrest follows a Nov. 21 arrest in South San Francisco after a theft at a mall, when he attempted to evade police by running onto an interstate highway before being detained.

A few days later, Mr. Otero reportedly stole $340 worth of items from an East San Francisco bike store.

This is precisely how things like sharia law got started. Amputation of the offending hand(s) with a scimitar and cauterizing the bloody stump in hot oil is why Saudi Arabia for example doesn’t have a real big shoplifting problem.

That sounds like a pretty tough sentence- I see maybe a 1/2 hour community service if he feels up to it

He'll claim asylum, get a $5000 credit card, a free phone, and a free plane ticket to the islands.

The problem is, I can just see some man-bun wearing bleeding heart liberal saying something pretty much exactly like that.

And the leftist media bleats endlessly about mass incarceration of blacks. If this one had spent a few months on the Parchmen chain gang he might have gotten a clue regarding his career choice.

He looks better than several U.S. Senators—and probably has higher moral standards as well.

Surely they can give this guy a break, just this one time. I’m sure he has learned his lesson and will never do it again. He will find a job, work hard, and soon be the president of his own company (maybe as a product reseller)
