North Texas congressional fight tests MAGA appeal against older conservative strains (primary is March 5th)
Dallas Morning News ^ | 12/28/23 | Todd J. Gillman

ASHINGTON – A conservative will win the Republican nomination to replace longtime Rep. Michael Burgess in a Denton-based congressional district.

The question is what flavor of conservative.

Brandon Gill, a 29-year-old unknown to local activists until a month ago, is already basking in former President Donald Trump’s endorsement. His biggest rival is Scott Armey, the former Denton County judge and son of Dick Armey, the tea party godfather and House majority leader who held the seat before Burgess.

Gill worked with his father-in-law Dinesh D’Souza on 2000 Mules, a film purporting to expose massive fraud in the 2020 election. Rivals widely assume D’Souza is bankrolling the pro-Gill super PAC that surfaced the day after Gill entered the race, boasting $1 million in anonymous pledges and calling Gill “THE America First candidate in this race.”

Gill founded the DC Enquirer, a conservative news site, which refers to him as “America First patriot Brandon Gill” in its coverage of his campaign. He regularly issues online rallying cries such as “Get dirty books out of our children’s schools!!!!” and calls for mass deportations.

Armey says he is focused on fiscal responsibility and getting things done in Congress.

Dick Armey was a classic RINO and I'm sure the apple didn't fall far from the tree.

"Armey says he is focused on fiscal responsibility and getting things done in Congress."

Of course he does. Focusing on "fiscal" issues primarily is the hallmark of a spineless RINO.

I hope the Trump endorsement gets it.

I thought the same thing. Translation: I don’t like the icky cultural battles. My idol is Eyepatch McCain.

This is my district, Burgess is a useless RINO. At this point, Gill is who I will support. Armey seems very RINO to me and has had a lifetime of government jobs - no thanks.

Go with MAGA candidates, only.

Note to author of the article: RINOs are not conservative in any way. The race is MAGA vs RINO. Stop making it sound like RINOs are a "different flavor" of conservative. They are traitorous spies who collude with Democrats to cheat real conservatives out of office and who are also happy to join with Democrats when it comes to voting for endless pork in Congressional budgets.

They always say that and we always fall for it.

I don’t know these two but Armey but the impression from the article is that Armey is trouble and no conservative.

"Armey says he is focused on fiscal responsibility and getting things done in Congress."

I would be really hard pressed to vote for a 29 year old kid, since most of this generation does not start to grow up until they hit their 40's. but this statement is straight up rino. This guy does not get it, and does not deserve the seat.

“...most of this generation does not start to grow up until they hit their 40’s...”

Bingo — “40 is the new 20” for the vast majority of Generation Snowflake. Maybe 20% grow a brain at a younger age, and some of them never do (or at least haven’t so far). To see which ones have grown a brain, look at how they vote. Simple as that.

Almost every candidate now into the TX-26 race has jumped in within the past few months, so there’s no way to tell who the big money is backing yet.

The one candidate who got in before the last FEC reporting deadline is a Republican who ran for the U.S. House (and lost his primary) in 2022.... in California.

This district is trending leftward like all of the north Dallas suburbs, but there’s little chance of any Democrat winning a U.S. House race here in the immediate future.

The next GOPe trick will be (aside from getting Armey Jr. a ton of $$$$) to get more conservatives into the race to split the non-RINO primary vote.

Name recognition (Armey) + RINO tendencies (Armey) + big $$$$$ (Armey) + split conservatives == a fairly easy RINO (Armey) win. NON-split conservatives is our only hope.

Seriously, I’d rather have prolonged gridlock in congress than the type of “done” they’re talking about.

“”” son of Dick Armey, the tea party godfather””””

This seems to be a bit of rewriting history.

Getting things done is not conservatism, because conservatism opposes government involvement in life.

This is not conservatism. This is Swampism.

Armey is RINO through and through, and the kid has been endorsed by Trump. Easy decision.

Name recognition and money are a tough combo to beat.

However:

As the article notes, name recognition wasn’t enough for Armey when he ran for this same seat in 2002, trying to succeed his father. Perhaps the negative aspect of nepotism outweighs a famous name (and lots of money), sometimes.

That election was a strange one: Armey trounced the field in the primary and more than doubled the number of votes his nearest competitor (Burgess) had. Current Congressman Keith Self was also in that primary, finishing third.

Armey, with 45.4% to Burgess’ 22.5%, didn’t get enough of the vote to avert a runoff however. In that runoff, Armey was not able to improve his percentage AT ALL which is very strange for someone who had such a large lead — he got exactly 45.4% again and Burgess got the support of the voters of EVERY other candidate from the primary.

In between the primary and the runoff in 2002 the local liberal media did one hatchet job after another on Armey — indicating by their fear of him that Armey was the actual conservative in the race, and that Burgess was the acceptably squishy alternative in their view.
