Multiple Pizza Hut operators throughout California announced on Tuesday that they would be laying off hundreds of drivers before the new state minimum fast food wage of $20/an hour comes into effect on April 1st.
The new law, Assembly Bill 1228, has been one of the most contentious of the year. Originally, the bill would have raised the minimum to $22 an hour and hold franchise corporations accountable for labor law violations at individual locations. In addition, thanks to a new Fast Food Council created from a new law signed last year (AB 257), benefits like paid leave and predictive scheduling would be introduced. Fast food companies swiftly took action, to hold a referendum on the minimum wage, as well as more electronic kiosks going up to replace cashiers.

Following the layoffs, the Pizza Hut locations will rely on delivery companies such as Uber Eats, GrubHub and DoorDash to deliver pizzas.

You are exactly correct. Thomas Sowell (among others) has long said that we wouldn’t be in the state we were in if leftists were forced to live with the ramifications of their legislative endeavors.
They are largely immune from them, living in their bubbles.
They like to say that they are the party of “the little man“, but in truth, they hold them in contempt, and have nothing but contempt for them. They view them only as tools towards power.
I wonder how many of these 1,200 drivers who were fired may have actually believed that tripe. I’m sure that they was some percentage who thought it was going to be a great thing, that they were going to get a boost in pay.
I sure do have sympathy for those of them who didn’t think that way, and didn’t buy into the whole elevate the minimum wage thing, although I understand, it would be hard for many of them not to.
Exactly - it is the same up here in USSR-WA. The Legislature is full of this type of moron. It’s embarrassing.
These are and always were entry level jobs filled mostly by High School and college kids. They were never intended for Adults trying to raise a family.
Politicians, who don’t understand business and have never written a paycheck, can stay the he** away from telling business owners how to run their business.

I bet those driver were really happy that the government had given them a nice raise.
Now guess who they’re going to blame for losing their jobs?
