Spirit Airlines has apologized after it mistakenly put an unaccompanied child on the wrong flight during the holiday season travel rush.
The child was supposed to fly from Philadelphia International Airport to Southwest Florida International Airport in Fort Myers on Thursday. But the minor was “incorrectly boarded” on a flight to Orlando, according to the airline.
“The child was always under the care and supervision of a Spirit Team Member, and as soon as we discovered the error, we took immediate steps to communicate with the family and reconnect them,” Spirit said in a statement Saturday.
“We take the safety and responsibility of transporting all of our Guests seriously and are conducting an internal investigation,” the airline added. “We apologize to the family for this experience.”
Spirit did not provide any information about the child or explain how the mistake happened. WINK-TV, a television station in Fort Myers, identified the child as a 6-year-old first-time flyer who was supposed to visit his grandmother.
“I ran inside the plane to the flight attendant and I asked her, ‘Where’s my grandson? He was handed over to you at Philadelphia?’ She said, ‘No, I had no kids with me,’” Maria Ramos, the boy’s grandma, told WINK-TV.
Fortunately, Ramos’ grandchild called her and said he had landed — 160 miles away. She told WINK-TV that she wants answers.
“I want them to call me [and] let me know how my grandson ended up in Orlando,” Ramos said. “How did that happen? Did they get him off the plane? The flight attendant — after mom handed him with paperwork — did she let him go by himself? He jumped in the wrong plane by himself?”
When my Dad died in 1980, I had to book a flight on Northwest to Minneapolis & change planes to Madison, Wis.
MY travel agent said that there were THREATS of a NW strike, but that she & others had been ASSURED that it was still pending-—not active.
I got neighbors to take me to LAX & found out that NW HAD ALREADY GONE ON STRIKE-—BEFORE THEY SOLD TICKETS TO MY AGENT. THEY WERE LYING ALL DAY LONG.
THEN-—They wanted me & go back home & come back to airport for 6 AM flight-—all of which would have been darn near impossible-—nothing but land travel.
I birched enough at the NW counter that they got me a room-—and I shared it with another nice lady-—we were both in same predicament.
WAS about the worst flying experience I could have——
I NEVER flew with NW again.

Hi!
Indeed, airlines can be just awful at times...
and the tsaHassle at the airports can be terrible, too...
we are trying to stay on firm ground as much as we can nowadays

The youth can hitch a ride from Orlando to ft Myers, surely.
I was on a flight to Mobile, Alabama many years ago.
As we were approaching the airport, I noticed some complexes looked much larger than I expected.
They announced were landing in Miami, Florida. At least 15-20 people exclaimed “Miami! We’re supposed to be in Mobile, AL”
They had led us across the tarmac to the wrong airplane when we boarded.
My family is currently watching Home Alone. Same story in reverse.
With the HUGE AMOUNT of child trafficking going on with our Open Borders, putting a kid on a wrong flight is no big deal, as there will always be some adult ready to ‘pick him up’ on the other end.
So Spirit probably got confused and figured it was simply more NGO/Catholic/US Gov child trafficking going on.
I had pretty much the opposite experience on NWA. At age 6, I flew, unaccompanied from MSP to MIA. They treated me like royalty. I couldn’t wait for another chance to travel alone.
Worse yet, Raptured to Orlando.
Kevin!
Maybe he didn’t want to go to Grandma’s. Has anyone at NBC thought about this.
What parent would put unaccompanied 6 year old on any plane?
