JERUSALEM (AP) — The Israeli military campaign in Gaza, experts say, now sits among the deadliest and most destructive in history. In just over two months, the offensive has wreaked more destruction than the razing of Syria’s Aleppo between 2012 and 2016, Ukraine’s Mariupol or, proportionally, the Allied bombing of Germany in World War II. It has killed more civilians than the U.S.-led coalition did in its three-year campaign against the Islamic State group.

An interesting book was published a while back that tells the story of Cave Rats, GIs who volunteered to clear out enemy caves in the Vietnam war. And in WW-II, in the Pacific theater, I think the preferred method of extermination in caves was the flamethrower.

Probably a skirmish compared to the sack of Aleppo by Tamerlane in 1400. Afterwards, Tamerlane built a pyramid of 20,000 severed heads.
