I think something like this is correct. Never heard the expression "Cathedral" applied to it though.
As an old guy, I remember well the heated political rhetoric surrounding the whole Viet Nam era. Upshot of that -- we went away after 58K of buddies were lost.
Iraq? We left, almost. Afghanistan? We left. Syria? We're still there on behalf of Kurds, who are not a nation. Lots of conflicts / kinetic actions / police actions / wars these days.
Not to forget the "war on poverty." The "war on drugs." The "war on terror." And probably we shouldn't forget the Wray FBI's surveillance of traditional Catholics, and more. I suspect the media is having a hard time trying to write "apologia" in their advocacy journalism, as people walk away.
