If I was an a protest like that, I would be sickened at the idea that a far ambush or sniper might attack us and even if not hit, I might get killed in the stampede.

Blocking roads and bridges should be one of the harshest felonies in modern American law with instant reactions by whatever force is necessary, including SWAT, or some sort of billy club reaction team, instant brute force, and harsh sentences until everyone learns that mass hostage-taking on public roads is off the table.
