She returned alone from a wedding in the wee hours. He may have been right on her heels (without her knowing) and shoved his way in before she was able to shut the door behind her. Or she may have fallen for some sort of BS. “Could I just use your phone to call my mom?”
I think your explanation is right. Easy for a stalker to push a woman or trip her as she gets the front door open.
