Trump does have to pick somebody who brings him votes he doesn’t already have, but Haley’s already put herself out of the running with her comments. Still, she has a point about the difficulty of predicting what DJT will do.

Haley is the only potential candidate from either party that can turn the south blue.

The GOP is largely made up of three factions:

1. Trumpers (to include supporters of Ramaswamy who is basically Trump's avatar at the debates).
2. Former Trumpers (these are DeSantis supporters).
3. Never Trumpers (Nikki Haley and all the rest).

Should Trump earn the nomination, and it looks like he will, he will retain his support, Ramaswamy's support, and the DeSantis "Former Trumpers" will begrudgingly come along.

Picking Vivek as VP won't earn him any new votes nor will it cost him any.
Picking DeSantis as VP won't earn him any new votes nor will it cost him any.

It'll be the "Never Trumpers" that he's going to have to close the deal with. Understanding this, a Nikki Haley VP pick makes perfect sense. While Trump's MAGA base will grumble at first, they've demonstrated a willingness to quickly change their positions on any issue to go along with Trump. If he loses any MAGA votes, he's likely to make up a greater number from the "Never Trumpers" who will be a little bit pacified with a young Nikki Haley on an old man's ticket.
