Fears of a NATO Withdrawal Rise as Trump Seeks a Return to Power
NYT via Yahoo ^ | December 9th, 2023 | Jonathan Swan, Charlie Savage and Maggie Haberman

For 74 years, the NATO has been America’s most important military alliance. Presidents of both parties have seen NATO as a force multiplier enhancing the influence of the United States by uniting countries on both sides of the Atlantic in a vow to defend one another.

Donald Trump has made it clear that he sees NATO as a drain on U.S. resources by freeloaders. He has held that view for at least a quarter-century.

In his 2000 book, “The America We Deserve,” Trump wrote that “pulling back from Europe would save this country millions of dollars annually.” As president, he repeatedly threatened a U.S. withdrawal from the alliance.

Yet as he runs to regain the White House, Trump has said precious little about his intentions. His campaign website contains a single cryptic sentence: “We have to finish the process we began under my administration of fundamentally reevaluating NATO’s purpose and NATO’s mission.” He and his team refuse to elaborate.

That vague line has generated enormous uncertainty and anxiety among European allies and American supporters of the country’s traditional foreign policy role.

European ambassadors and think tank officials have been making pilgrimages to associates of Trump to inquire about his intentions. At least one ambassador, Finland’s Mikko Hautala, has reached out directly to Trump and sought to convince him of his country’s value to NATO as a new member, according to two people familiar with the conversations.

In interviews over the past several months, more than a half-dozen current and former European diplomats — speaking on condition of anonymity for fear of retribution from Trump should he win — said alarm was rising on Embassy Row and among their home governments that Trump’s return could mean not just the abandonment of Ukraine but a broader U.S. retreat from the continent and a gutting of the Atlantic alliance.

You’re too emotional for your own good. You come off as unstable.

LOL!

NATO has years of experience in facilitating mass illegal migration.

“NATO ships will not do the job of national coastguards in the Aegean. Their mission is not to stop or turn back those trying to cross into Europe. And this in no way represents a militarisation of the response to the crisis.”

I get the point of deterrence, but when everybody wants to be in NATO just so they can be protected by the United States, it’s time to exit. Some of us are tired of being involved in Europe’s problems.

And paying for them endlessly, so they can expand their socialist paradise on our dime.

“So to be realistic what we would wind up with is vulnerability to economic blackmail and a military too small to defend ourselves. “

America has to arm for and fight endless overseas globalist wars because doing its own manufacturing and oil production would be “too expensive” ?

Also, America would need a bigger military to defend its own territory than it does with 750 bases overseas and a global empire to protect ?

Yeah saying that NATO is essential to the security of Europr and America is “propaganda” - maybe that makes sense if you’re in an asylum.

The UN is utterly useless.

As for NATO, the focus should be on enforcing the obligations of its respective members (i.e., the members actually follow the commitments they agreed to, and not to act to the detriment of any other member). Failing that, disband it.

There is no incentive for Europe to defend itself when Uncle Stupid is willing to do so. That’s why they can afford to pay for all the many social programs and excellent infrastructure.
They’re waiting fot Marshall Plan 2.0

Trump Seeks a Return to Power” Nope. No bias there.

Doesn’t he seek a return to power?
What is the bias?

If they meet their obligations there is no reason for US to be part of the treaty.

Well said, MARINER.
The North Atlantic Treaty Organization lost all reason for existing once the Wall came down more than thirty years ago.
NATO was created as a counter weight to the Soviet Bloc, and the aggressive expansion by Communist Russia into Eastern Europe in the late 1940s.
The alliances that the US made back then have already turned deadly and caused far more misery than most Americans suspect.
For instance, after the war in 1945, France wanted to regain its status as a Great Power (such as a seat on the UN Security Council). At the time, the French thought to regain its pre war colonies to restore its status, but did not have the resources to do it. They demanded help from Harry Truman, who provided the French with transport aboard US ships to bring French troops back to what was then called Indochina, now known as Viet Nam. The French failed in their efforts against Ho Chi Minh, and America got sucked into the mess. We lost more than 58,000 young Americans because of a meaningless post war European alliance that ended in absolute disaster for America.
This is just one example of the disastrous consequences of short-sighted alliances, ones that very often morph into something that bears no relation to the original intent, yet carries terrible consequences.
Abolish NATO completely, and start over.

“If they meet their obligations there is no reason for US to be part of the treaty.”

I disagree. It is called the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (or the North Atlantic Alliance) because the two main areas (North America and Europe) for the most part have direct connection to the North Atlantic (or its several Seas). And North America and Europe have much in common, including heritage and lineage. Hell, the pro-Russia FReepers justify Russia’s invasion of Ukraine by claiming the invasion was to protect Ukrainian citizens of Russian ethnicity. So, if it’s okay for Russia to defend its ethnic brothers, can’t the same be said of Europe and North Anmerica?

He certainly is angry about the collapse of the Ukraine Project, isn't he?

I've been noticing desperate attempts on his part, and the part of others, to hitch little Vloddy's broken-down Ulraine wagon to the New Hope of the neocons - the Hamas-Israel war.
