The city-state of Venezia (Venice) existed for 1,100 years because it was located on an island and difficult to conquer. Taiwan has the same geographic advantage. A marine invasion of Taiwan would be a very difficult military operation for China. This is the main reason Taiwan/Formosa has been independent from the mainland since the 1800s.
