Back in the 1950s it was joked that there were more communists teaching at Princeton than in Moscow. Years later it was found that it wasn’t a joke!
I work at a community college and even at this level I would contend that 80% of the faculty are either socialists or communists in their politics. Staff are probably 50/50 split. You know who you can talk to and who you can’t talk freely too. Our current president is a conservative but on many issues is told by his superiors you will support the leftist view or else.
I have debated faculty over free speech and their stances are frightening. They “support free speech but” they always have a caveat. I make a point of getting them to say this and then call them out, that in reality you do not support the 1st Amendment or freedom. The result is always red faced rage on their part.
