Following several new documents containing details of the Tesla Cybertruck posted to the EPA’s website, we have been able to better understand the efficiencies the truck will achieve. While Cybertruck should perform better than nearly all its current competitors in the electric pickup segment, the slightly smaller Rivian R1T appears to have it beaten – even with larger wheels and battery packs.

Biden-backed electric vehicle company files for bankruptcy

Of course, the real purpose of these companies is to recycle the money back to Dem pols, not to produce product or profit.
Which EV truck sucks less? Who cares? They’re all completely unsuitable compared to diesel
Rivian has been in business since 2009. Amazon is a big backer of Rivian, both as an investor and a customer. They aren’t remotely a Solyndra.
And ICE trucks are more efficient that any EV truck.
Glad we got that all cleared up.
Lets see what happens if Rivian gets cut off the taxpayer funded trough and actual has to rely on consumer choice and its own profitability to survive. Its only massive government subsidies that keep the EV industry from a well deserved bankruptcy now.
Rivians also would appear to have more polygons, 16-bit vs. the 8-bit Cybertruck if you will.
Is it too late to buy a Hunter Biden painting and get a green energy grant?
The main problem with buying either truck is then you have to own it.
Rivian is losing money because they lack scale. Lots of upfront costs and overhead but not enough capacity to deliver and sell vehicles. Tesla lost money for many years too. Ford is losing a bundle on its EV division too. Rivian reported it will be cash flow positive in 2024 (though probably not profitable on EBITDA) and has designed a new battery system for future builds that will save apx $10k per truck. Anyway the real point is scale. If Rivian can triple its sales volume they could probably make some money. Plus they have orders for 100,000 delivery vans for Amazon and other parcel carriers. It’s just my opinion but I think Rivian is a decent bet assuming no majors changes in political or consumer preferences. But there will be other choices like the Ford Lightening too so whether Rivian can keep growing sales volume will be the key.
The cybertruck is more of a concept than a commercial product, imho. It has a lot of interesting features. It’s the first car to use “drive by wire” tech. That’s been used in planes for many years but never before in a car. IOW, the steering wheel is not connected to a column or to the wheels. It is computer controlled. You never need to turn the wheel more than 45 degrees left or right the computer extrapolates based on speed how much to turn the tires to get the desired direction. It also turns all 4 wheels as needed. So at slow speed a full left turn on the steering wheel will be interpreted as an attempt to make a u-turn. No need to turn the wheel 3 times around. Just 45 degrees left or right it won’t event go further. Stuff like that make it groundbreaking. Not sure how it will be accepted by consumers - maybe more of a luxury toy than a real work vehicle but the market will sort it out. From here it may influence other vehicles from sports cars to semi trucks. The stainless steel body is also interesting- if overkill. But that’s a bit of a tell that it’s not necessarily built for Everyman but more of a commercialized proof of concept.
I just do not see any usefulness for any EV trucks.
I do not like EV at all, but if forced into one, the small commuter car could make some sense.
Driven for ten miles commute daily, recharged at home overnight. That’s about anything which makes sense in EV business.
Excellent comments.
I see lots of Rivians on the road here in the Seattle area. Pickups and an SUV thing. Every time I see one I’m reminded of the FR article on the guy that was quoted $42,000 to get rid of a minor dent in the rear corner.
The rear quarter panel is integrated with the roof and the other side. Hopefully he was able to get just that area repaired and not get ripped-off by the dealer to replace the entire back end of the truck.
Saw two of the Tesla trucks getting off-loaded from a car carrier last week. And I thought the Rivians were ugly!
Cash flow positive because of operations, or because of cash from loans? There’s a HUGE difference, especially with a negative EBITDA.
NO.ONE.CARES.
They both suck.
The EPA, under RINO Christine Todd Whitman also told people that the air at 9/11 Ground Zero was safe to breathe.

Who would believe anything from the EPA?
It takes years for bystanders to catch up to the characteristics of new technologies.
Eventually, collision insurance will be 10 times for an EV what it is for an ICE vehicle in the same price class. and, underground garages will prohibit EV’s from charging on site or even parking altogether. Taxing authorities will lift the free ride on EV’s and owners will get a bill in the mail that is equivalent to the petrol fuel tax (about $75/gallon or $500 or so. Then the parties is over.
$.75 gallon.
