Hungary’s Orban demands Ukraine’s EU membership be taken off the agenda at a bloc summit

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban demanded on Monday that Ukraine’s membership in the European Union and billions of euros in funding meant for the war-torn country be taken off the agenda at a summit of the bloc’s leaders next week.

In a letter to European Council President Charles Michel, who will chair the Dec. 14-15 summit in Brussels, Orban insisted that a “strategic discussion” is needed first about Ukraine’s European future and warned that forcing a decision could destroy EU unity.

Decisions on EU’s enlargement and a review of its long-term budget, which includes 50 billion euros ($54.1 billion) in aid for Kyiv, can only be taken unanimously by all 27 member countries.

NATO isn't worth saving.

Orban can't move Hungary farther away from the EU Pirate scum.

He'll do well to keep Hungary out of the way when the EU Nations start Warring with one another again.

The EU screws everyone.

While I am no fan of the EU, Orban is just doing Putin’s bidding in this matter, and he is also quite hypocritical, as he gets aboue $1 billion a year from the EU. Why he is more deserving of that from the EU than Ukraine is a ,mystery.

GOOD!!

Ukraine MUST negotiate in good faith with Russia! It’s too bad that we don’t have another Henry Kissinger to help the negotiations!

Hungary can unilaterally withdraw from the EU (ala “Brexit”), and likewise can unilaterally withdraw from NATO, per Article 13 of the North Atlantic Treaty: “After the Treaty has been in force for twenty years, any Party may cease to be a Party one year after its notice of denunciation has been given to the Government of the United States of America, which will inform the Governments of the other Parties of the deposit of each notice of denunciation.”

No one is keeping Hungary in either. Hungary, as an independent and sovereign nation can withdraw from one or both at its own choosing.

So, why is Hungary still in either one or both?

Which brings up an interesting question: Hungary has been Russia’s point man (knowingly or not) re: NATO and the EU vis-a-vis Russia. Hungary’s presence in those organizations actually serves Russia’s interests. Since Russia considers both NATO and the EU to pose existential threats to Russia, Hungary has, really, been serving as Russia’s Trojan Horse
— or at least as a thorn in NATO’s and the EU’s sides — whether by intent or not.

As for any military conflict between Russia and NATO, I think it is pretty much projected that Hungary would remain neutral.

Like I said: An interesting question.

Hungary needs to buck up and quit NATO and the EU if this is how they feel.

Bye.

Not calling you someone's "agent" - rather, promoting the opposite of Orban's position (ie. immediate EU/ NATO membership) is not at all neutral. It is very much, someone else's strategic agenda.

Ukraine is a pawn being torn apart by both camps

Hungary can unilaterally withdraw from the EU (ala “Brexit”), and likewise can unilaterally withdraw from NATO, per Article 13 of the North Atlantic Treaty:

Hungary very well may do that. They will probably wait until the war in Ukraine is clearly over, because otherwise and until then, they are literally "surrounded."

The way things are going in Europe with the totalitarians in the EU government. I can foresee the populations of Europe siding with a Russian invasion to free them.

Go Hungary!!! A lone voice of sanity over there. They don’t let the EU steamroll them.

And the US needs to withdraw from NATO. We should have done it when the Soviet Union collapsed. Instead NATO turned into War, Inc.

NATO is a threat to the entire world.

And. We. Pay. For. It.

“Europe countries need to get out of the totalitarian EU.”

Maybe so, but is that what Orban is suggesting? No. He just wants to not let Ukraine in, while he collects about $1billion from the EU. Obviously his issue is not your issue.
