I’m not surprised at all. Until the Pope invoked Infallibility late in the 19th century it was mainstream Christian doctrine that the Jews were responsibility for murdering Jesus, whom they regarded as a Rabbi.
Here’s the correct Roman Catholic response, since that Papal Bull more than a century ago, to the question, “Who murdered Jesus Christ, Son of God, our Lord and Saviour”:
I DID!!!
Strange that it was the Jews who were blamed instead of the Romans.
Why aren’t the Italians responsible for the murder of Jesus?
I had in my collection a text used for generations in Catholic seminaries in which the author stated that the Gospels were "inerrant" excepting when they stated the Romans crucified Jesus. That text claimed 1) error in the Gospels, and 2) Jews did the actual act of crucifixion. The latest Catholic doctrine overturned that, and it stands today. It is an interesting side to the larger narrative.
Declaration on the Relation of the Church to Non-Christian Religions -- NOSTRA AETATE -- Proclaimed by His Holiness Pope Paul VI on October 28, 1965
Lachrymabilem Judaeorum was issued in 1247 to German prelates by Pope Innocent IV; ordered an end to persecution of Jews and declared that the blood libel accusation is false.
