Power company says it's halting battery storage plan after backlash, death threat

A Toronto-based power corporation says it's halting its proposal for a battery storage facility in an eastern Ontario township after facing intense local pushback — including someone uttering a death threat during an open house.

The mayor of the Township of Elizabethtown-Kitley, meanwhile, says that while the Ontario Provincial Police were called to the meeting — and he regrets how it went down — Baseload Power Corp. ultimately failed to gain traction because it did not consult widely or early enough.

"Don't leave it until the last minute," said Mayor Brant Burrow of how the company handled its pitch.

In recent weeks, several Ontario communities have been asked to lend their support to renewable energy projects.

It comes as the Independent Electricity Systems Operator (IESO), which manages the province's energy needs, is soliciting pitches from companies on how to help shoulder Ontario's growing power demands.

Baseload Power proposed to build a lithium-ion battery energy storage system with a maximum generating capacity of 300 megawatts in a rural northern part of Elizabethtown-Kitley, a township whose southern boundary is more than 100 kilometres from Ottawa. (The IESO is seeking to add a total of 4,000 megawatts to the grid.)

The site would have taken up about eight to 10 hectares, according to the company.

It would also have been close to some multigenerational farms, Burrow said. Locals had safety concerns, he said, and felt the process was rushed and Baseload Power wasn't providing adequate information.

Things came to a head during a Nov. 2 public meeting hosted by the company.

Jonathan Sandler, the company's president, told CBC that as soon as he opened his mouth at that meeting, someone interrupted and "basically said, 'Get the eff out of here. We don't want you in our township.'"

The company never got through its full presentation due to screaming, cursing and other behaviour that was "way beyond reasonable," Sandler said....

“... lithium-ion battery energy storage system with a maximum generating capacity of 300 megawatts”

Idiot author. Batteries do not GENERATE any power.

Obviously they only store what was generated elsewhere.

I took that to mean that they planned to build the battery storage as well as a 300 megawatt generating capacity. Two different systems.

Why not? They see the left doing this every day.

Anyone know whether the company studied other commonly used types of storage, such as pump storage?

Canadians are used to the hard left sneering with a moderate, and the conservatives responding with "Well, okay . . . but not so fast."

“death threat“

How convenient.

I took it to mean that the batteries can release their stored power at a max rate of 300 megawatt. With battery backup power there are two metrics: 1) how much power can it store, and 2) when it releases the power how fast can it do. Item #2 is the 300 megawatt (assuming the author used the correct unit "megawatt" instead of "megawatt hours", which would be how much is stored). If so, it is about both the bandwidth (using an internet term) of both the batteries and the inverters that convert DC power coming from the batteries into AC (how much AC power can come from the battery array through the inverters if the entire neighborhood turned on their appliances at the same time).

It's a dumb idea to use this for the grid. Especially with the battery storage outside in cold Ontario instead of in the ground where they'd stay relatively warm.

The eco-left does not have to be rational. They support wind and solar power but if you want to build a wind farm or a solar farm, they will oppose it.

Electric vehicles depend on lithium mining, but if you want to build a lithium mine, they will oppose it. We’ve recently found lithium deposits in Nevada larger than the rest of the world’s deposits combined and sure enough, the eco-left is coming out of the woodwork to fight against developing it.

I’m not wild about any of this stuff, because I don’t believe in the underlying climate change religion. But they do.
