He is a tangled and confused political backwash of the War, with a LOT to answer for- particularly with the crimes of the Reconstruction which profited greatly his branch of the big R republican fed gov which would have continued if not for the non-conviction/impeachment (by 1 vote) of Lincoln’s VP Andrew Johnson. Seriously- the Radical Republicans were and are remembered in history as thieves, quite distinguished from the post war binding up of wounds and support of the coming expansion of the US world power (Spanish American War etc, and all wars thereafter supported by the descendants of both sides of the Civil, in Unity and Patriotism). Well put. Contemporary accounts I've read say that he was a nasty, vindictive man, who also put personal profit high in his priorities. Not a statesman worthy of so much as a plaster bust in a crate in warehouse somewhere.
