ICE to close Calif. facility able to hold 2,000 illegal immigrants amid ongoing crisis: sources
Fox News ^ | November 30, 2023 | Adam Shaw

The facility has been mostly dormant due to a 2020 court order limiting intake because of COVID-19...

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is expected to close down a detention facility in Adelanto, Calif., that can house nearly 2,000 illegal immigrant inmates but has been nearly empty for years due to a COVID-era court order ..-- just as the administration is calling for more detention beds for the agency.

ICE was blocked by a September 2020 court order from sending more detainees to the privately-operated facility after a lawsuit demanding fewer detainees due to the COVID-19

....

But that order is still in place, despite the COVID-19 emergency declaration having ended earlier this year and similar facilities -- including in the area -- having expanded capacity. While able to house nearly 2,000 detainees, only a handful of immigrants live there.

...

The closing --expected imminently -- is expected to impact more than 300 workers who currently staff the facility. The National Federation of Federal Employees recently warned of a "devastating" impact on workers if the facility were to close, particularly before Christmas.

...

It’s the latest move by the Biden administration to reduce the use of private immigration detention facilities -- which then-candidate Biden promised to do in 2020.

...

At the same time Secretary Mayorkas and President Biden are asking Congress to fund new detention beds, they’re considering closing a state-of-the-art facility that offers almost 2,000 beds," - Homeland Security Committee Chair Mark Green..,

It just goes to show that the Biden administration’s talk about immigration enforcement is cheap – its actions tell the real story,"

Don’t tell me. Let me guess. The ICE building has started melting due to global warming and causing all the other Federal buildings to rise.

Adelanto is a long way from the border with Mexico assuming these “detainees” were picked up there. Seems a strange place to have that facility.

Legally, ‘illegal immigrants’ are neither legal, nor immigrants. Immigrants have legal status here. Illegal aliens do not.

Exactly you cannot be an immigrant if you are here illegally... to immigrate to somewhere you have to do so legally.

You are an illegal alien, period.

Thanks for that....do they put the “illegals” to work at the freight center?

George AFB is no longer and March AFB is no longer, right? Norton AFB used to be out there also, didn’t it? Is that still open? March became something else?

Can’t keep up but I’ve been gone from CA for a number of years now...McClellan where my husband was stationed in CA in the late ‘50’s is no longer there nor is Mather?

Like we don’t need an AF any longer? Wouldn’t surprise me if someone came up with that!!!

Lived in Sac when both bases were operational.

Some touch and gos at March about ten years ago. Used to fly over our previous house in Canyon Lake.

My cousin's husband was stationed at George circa early 60s then they went to Germany for 20 years including teaching on base after retirement.

Not up to date. I assume Sacto both bases are closed.

I propose the Marines give Mira Mar to San Diego County for new international airport. Looks to me Pendelton could add more runways and bring the missions on base.

“”Looks to me Pendelton could add more runways and bring the missions on base.””

Can’t do that - the illegals need that area for crossing! My husband used to shoot National Match Rifle at Pendleton years ago. You could actually see the many paths carved across the hills in that area where they crossed. Funny traveling from OC to San Diego years ago, we drove past the Border Patrol station before Oceanside - parking lots were full of BP cars and probably inside drinking coffee and playing cards as no one was out stopping the illegals. Remember the signs that warned motorists of people crossing the freeway in that area - 3 or 4 people holding hands and the last one in the line would be a little person being swept off their feet?? Have no idea if they’ve changed those signs by now. I’m sure they would be considered offensive today.

the border crossings are still on 15 and 5, 55 miles north of the border.

I thought the paths on Pendleton were where the marines ran the crucible, uphill before end of boot camp. My son did that run with full pack.

The reason you can’t do the airport thing is many members of congress are marines and you can’t take anything away. A marine president could do it, but when will that happen.

Any illegal caught on P should attended a special boot camp and be sent to Mexico to fight drug cartels.

That could very well be the truth. We were always told it was the migrants paths...but I wouldn’t have any trouble believing it was part of Marine training from boot camp...That kind of training is what made Marines!!

Prior to my son enlisting, the crucible was halted for a while When he was in, the marines distinguished themselves between those who ran the crucible and those who didn’t. It was good to see they re-instated it.
