Some suggest that OpenAI has landed upon a new approach to AI that either has attained true AI, which is nowadays said to be Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) or that demonstrably resides on or at least shows the path toward AGI. As a fast backgrounder for you, today’s AI is considered not yet at the realm of being on par with human intelligence. The aspirational goal for much of the AI field is to arrive at something that fully exhibits human intelligence, which would broadly then be considered as AGI, or possibly going even further into superintelligence (for my analysis on what this AI “superhuman” aspects might consist of, see the link here).
Nobody has yet been able to find out and report specifically on what this mysterious AI breakthrough consists of (if indeed such an AI breakthrough was at all devised or invented). This situation could be like one of those circumstances where the actual occurrence is a far cry from the rumors that have reverberated in the media. Maybe the reality is that something of modest AI advancement was discovered but doesn’t deserve the hoopla that has ensued. Right now, the rumor mill is filled with tall tales that this is the real deal and supposedly will open the door to reaching AGI.
On the matter of whether the AI has already achieved AGI per se, let’s noodle on that postulation. It seems hard to imagine that if the AI became true AGI we wouldn’t already be regaled with what it is and what it can do. That would be a chronicle of immense magnitude. Could the AI developers involved be capable of keeping a lid on such a life goal attainment that they miraculously found the source of the Nile or that they...turned stone into gold?

Mitch Randall - OpenAI & The Singularity
On a serious note, the subject of this discussion is that the laboratory versions of publically known chatbots are significantly more advanced, of course, and have made some kind of breakthrough.
No one directly involved will talk about it, but rumors abound...and leaks.
What is in the lab, to my knowledge, is amachine that has elements of self programming.
What Mitch Randall (see interview link upthread) says is that some of the scientists working on these advanced AI lab projects don't understand what is going on with this self-programming. In other words, it seems to have taken on a life of its own.
Randall says that we have already entered the early stages of the "singularity."
AI is phony. AI is software. Software can only repeat what is data imprinted. AI is a lie.
Does this breakthrough consist of programming alone, or does it also involve quantum or neural circuitry or some other advance in hardware?
I am conflicted.
BTW, I wonder if closed-minded Freepers realize that critical thinking and the scientific method are both impossible without open-mindedness.
This was part of the big to-do with Sam Altman's firing and quick re-hiring last week.
Please remain conflicted. AI can only attain output from that which is input. Simple fact. Please show me otherwise.
OpenAI is not capable of being persuaded by evidence to change an opinion or estimation.
Yay! Agreed. There is no such thing as artificial intelligence. Garbage in/Garbage out is still the rule. Perhaps groups like the WEF just want something to blame when some thing their experimenting on goes terribly wrong in the lab.
This continual practice of outsourcing, everything to India for IT need scapegoat as well when things go wrong in tech. AI about as real as climate change.
Yeah, right. Like I have time to waste on closed-minded people.
It's funny that we conservatives talk about how schools are no longer teaching kids critical thinking skills, but we have MANY people right here on FR can refuse to use critical thinking. Their minds are slammed shut and they refuse to think.
If you want to learn what's going on in AI, start studying the subject. There's more to it than you might realize.
I don't know if you are into math, but here's an AI math site that is pretty incredible at solving any formula you can throw at it. Give it a try. There's no programmer behind it that has already pre-solved every problem in the universe.

It's funny that people with the most negative opinions haven't actually used AI in their daily lives.
Reminds me of the Dunning-Kruger effect.
I think (therefore I am not AI) that AI is the ultimate form of socialism. Rather than an individual striving to develop the mind and creativity, it is done by AI. The individual loses out on self-improvement and self-development. While AI may bring a certain appearance of productivity through the ease of clicking up new products, his own creativity and critical thinking processes dwindle.
