Christians comprise approximately 18% of Bethlehem’s population. In 1950, Bethlehem and the surrounding villages were 86% Christian, but by 2016, it dipped to just 12 percent, according to Bethlehem mayor Vera Baboun. Christians have gone from around 80% of the population just after the establishment of the state of Israel in 1950, to around 12% today.
