It was a sinister attack that erupted after a simple road rage row. An innocent victim who was caught up in the crossfire; left with his hand severed by an axe amid the horror.
The violence exploded on the Newbold Estate in Rochdale in 2017, where organised crime gang 'Adam' had a firm hold - wreaking havoc on the streets and instilling fear in the many innocent civilians living there.
The victim, 18-year-old tree surgeon Cameron Brooksbank, was among his other colleagues who were set upon by the mob and attacked as he tried to diffuse the escalating volatility.
The group had been summoned there by Habibur Rahman, 27, who, in court, called the victims 'white b******s' who were in his 'country'. One of the mob, Mohammed Awais Sajid, known as 'Skinny', came armed with an axe as others were wielding knives, machetes, a clawhammer and a knuckle duster.
The violent act was one of retribution; Rahman, who was manager of his family's restaurant the Baytree in Blackley, had 'taken offence' at the driving of an elderly woman on nearby Church Road, shouting abuse at her before Cameron and others attempted to bravely intervene.

I guess one could contest who’s country it now is, but he’s likely accurate regarding the other part of his statement.

The proper verb employed for this intercessory role is "to defuse" the volatile situation, which in the figurative-literal sense would mean having the same effect as plainly literally quenching a lit fuse or separating it from its connection to the explosive substance it is meant to activate.
It may be that the writer has used a voice-to-text application to create the article, which could mistranslate the desired verb into a phonetically and grammatically equivalent verb "diffuse" which is what appears in the above quote.
Or perhaps it results from the author's misunderstanding of the use of the proper word for the victim's intervening role in the event being reported.
But for sure, the verb "to diffuse" is not the correct word to describe the action that failed to achieve the desired result.
he bottom line is that a journalist or editor ought to examine the contents resulting from the use of a voice-to-text application for its accuracy in producing the material that is to be printed and widely distributed.

A trained and willing armed population would go a long way in “diffuse” efforts.
