China's People's Liberation Army - Navy ship "Longushan" is reportedly ablaze just off the coast of China tonight. The vessel is reported to be "China's most advanced warship."
No OFFICIAL word on what caused the fire. I am not sure if China has acknowledged the fire yet ...
All mention of this is being rapidly scrubbed from China social media networks, and no official information is coming out of Beijing.
The vessel bears Hull Number 980 and is described as a Type 071 landing ship.
China's fifth Type 071 amphibious transport dock (LPD) Longhushan; with hull number 980) was commissioned with the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN or Chinese Navy) on September 12, 2018 in Shanghai.
Originally designed after the Taiwan Strait crisis in 1996, the Type 071, measuring 210 meters long and 28 meters wide, is capable of carrying an 800-man marine battalion and some 20 amphibious tanks.
PLAN ships are the best: they never catch fire, and are invulnerable to Western weapons.
More Chinese truth-obscuring propaganda.
False flag operation to get the Taiwan war started? When dictators/governments get themselves into serious trouble (significant threats to their control), wars are one of their most popular diversions.
Yep. Everything is ship shape.

Breaking news out of Los Angeles -
Mayor Bass and Gov Newsom offer to fix that ship in just two days.
Wow - What in the world happened to her?
“ There is a reason that the USN practices fire drills continuously (at least, they used to), and that is that an effective fire brigade can save a ship from disaster.”
Except in San Diego, I guess.
Smoke rising from stem-to-stern.
Good.
Maybe that is a new camouflage scheme ... (/sarc)
collateral damage?
That is just how it is in the woke Navy.

The US Navy version of setting oil pots on fire to simulate a fire:
I also use the "width=" html command to limit the size of pictures. Here I set it to width=840. Set the width and the photo autoformats to the proper scaling.
And I always Preview a picture to make sure that it appears the way I want it to.
My only experience of things naval has come from reading and rereading the Aubrey/Maturin books. No self-respecting executive officer in Nelson’s navy would have allowed a deck in such condition, let alone letting anyone know about it.
Holy cow.
That’s embarrassing.
Even a slob like me thinks that looks bad.
seems appropriate to ping you to above

ChiComm pilot thought it was an aircraft carrier and landed in the conning tower.
The smoke screen drill excuse is more transparent than the atmosphere on the moon. While it might fly with the non-military public, that was NOT a smoke screen drill for several reasons.
First, the Type 071 LPDs are powered by integrated combined diesel and diesel (CODAD) propulsion, controlled by an automated propulsion control system. They don't generate smoke the way you can with boiler systems. That smoke issues from the stack(s). This means you would need dedicated smoke generators.
Second, if they were generating a smoke screen the smoke would be trailing behind the ship and not pouring out of the bow, midships, and landing pad areas. Also the ship appears stationary.
Third, the smoke in the video is black indicating incomplete combustion. Smoke screen generators produce white smoke. This is created by un-burnt fuel droplets mixed with cool air. Either way, smoke screens are absolutely useless against radar directed naval guns and/or missiles.
I couldn't see much detail in the crappy cell phone video. I counted three, maybe four separate sources of smoke. None of them consistent with the smoke screen excuse.
The one I can't think of a reason for is the smoke column at the bow.
Regardless, that's not going to buff out.

The deck had been stripped in preparation for resurfacing.
“But according to Bryan Clark, a senior fellow at the Hudson Institute in Washington, D.C., the Hopper’s topside rust is less a function of time spent on the high seas and more the result of in-port maintenance.
“It looks like they stripped the deck to repair and repaint it, but then it got rusty right away because they stripped the paint away and then didn’t immediately re-add paint and a non-skid coating,” Clark said. “It’s not that abnormal, but it is unusual to strip the deck and not paint it right away, although sometimes you strip it and then it rains you can’t get the paint on it in time.”
