Minnesota was gone four decades ago at least... I'm not sure how far gone Minnesota really was at the time. Mondale was from Minnesota, wasn't as looney as McGovern, and still barely won the state. (49.72% - 49.54%) My sister lives there, and she really didn't go off the deep end until the Obama years.

A good number of political observers have commented that if President Reagan had made one or two more trips to Minnesota just before the election he would have carried Minnesota too!
