I guess homeschooling is out of the question.
To: DallasBiff
For some people, probably so, at least for the present.
Not every parent has the aptitude, the patience or the sense of when to apply discipline to their child/ student.
By the time some kids are in fourth grade (aprx. 9 years old)
some may already be treating their mom and dad with disrespect, ignoring them or wasting time arguing.

How does a mom that got a D in eigth-grade math home-school calculus?

Very soon to be obsoleted by AI.
I’d bet no longer than 5 years. It’ll be tuned to the learner’s strength, weaknesses and learning style

How much do tutors get paid? Apparently not enough because there’s few doing it.

I did history and language-literature. My wife did math, biology, and chemistry. I worked a 2:00PM to 10:00PM job. My wife worked an 8:00AM to 5:00PM job with travel.
Homeschooling was not hard. It was very satisfying. Fifteen years later the results are impressive.
Public Education in America is by large, child abuse.

My wife taught herself trig and calculus to track our son.
There are tons of options. Giving up shouldn’t be one of them

Public Education in America is by large, child abuse. Public Education in America is modeled after the Prussian public school system, which was created to mold farm boys into obedient soldiers after Napoleon made short work of them in the Napoleonic wars.

My local school district starts new teachers at $60k for essentially 8 months of full-time (Monday through Friday) work.
Tutors, even when hired through the district, make $10.50 per hour.
Bus drivers make twice that.
I think the shortage might be due to a lack of pay.

Interesting. I know for a fact there are a number of people who make money being tutors after bailing out of the chaos of the public school system. Maybe depends on where at.

Obviously a massive government program is needed. Heaven forbid any of these parents use online tutoring.

My daughter was a burned-out 1st grade teacher in our small town, which brought in section 8 housing years ago. She gave it up, started tutoring math mostly for high-school students, and is now looking into renting a larger space than she needs and charging other former teachers to use the space for their tutoring sessions.
I'm going to guess that she does not charge enough for her services, and the other tutors don't either. And my daughter probably can charge more for the rent to other teachers.

Based on some stories out there bout students attacking teachers-—I would NEVER offer to tutor in simple Math or Accounting....and I am damn good at Accounting.
