Intercepting a missile in flight is a hard task. Doubly so if it is over the south pole as there are zero assets anywhere near to south pole. In general, it is far better to just listen in on the telemetry as it will give us gobs of information we can’t otherwise get. The US maintains a listening post on the last island of the Aleutians where we can launch a 707 equipped with special antennas intended for just that task. As the south pole is very far away from any assets, I know about the launch would probably go unnoticed. Normally, anyone launching anything will publish a notice. But if the target is in the deep south Pacific, maybe not as this is where everyone crashes their spent satellites. It is so uninhabited and un-trafficked that the chance of hitting anyone, or anything is nil.
