The UN chief issued his rallying call as the global body warned in a new report that countries' greenhouse gas-cutting pledges put Earth on track for warming far beyond key limits – possibly up to a catastrophic 2.9 degrees Celsius this century.
The response must "light the fuse to an explosion of ambition in 2025," he said.
"That means national plans with clear 2030 and 2035 targets, that align with 1.5 degrees, that cover the whole economy, and that plot a course for ending fossil fuels."
Taking into account countries' carbon-cutting plans, the UN warned Monday that the planet is on a path for disastrous heating of between 2.5C and 2.9C by 2100. Based just on existing policies and emissions-cutting efforts, global warming would reach 3C.

This UN Chief is getting his information from alchemists who are just making up numbers. Carbon dioxide has nothing to do with climate change. Why, after 50 years of failed predictions, have these people not figured it out?
Water vapor accounts for 98.35% of all greenhouse gases, and 100% of climate change. Water vapor is a powerful greenhouse gas owing to the presence of the hydroxyl bond which strongly absorbs in the infra-red. The volume of water vapor in the atmosphere is more than a 105 times the volume of carbon dioxide.
Just because carbon dioxide is also a greenhouse gas does not mean that a minuscule volume of CO2 is a factor in climate change. Water vapor dominates and drives the weather and climate. Carbon dioxide has is own life cycle.
Global weather events like floods and hurricanes are the end result of water vapor activity interacting with the Sun and the atmosphere.
Climate change is the long term result of water vapor interacting with the Sun (sunspots, solar cycles, solar flares, etc.), aerosols in the atmosphere, and the oceans.
If water vapor cannot be controlled by mankind, and water vapor is the cause of climate change, then mankind has nothing to do with climate change.
