Before Maidan, Zelenskyy was a celebrated guest on Russian TV, spoke Russian not Ukrainian, and lived in a country with no prospect of joining NATO, and at least ten years away from being considered good enough to join the European Union.
Yanukovych, the Ukrainian president, and Azarov his prime minister, were about as friendly to Russia as you can get without going full Lukashenko... Until repeat nastiness from Russia drove the country to look West.
Khazakstan and Tajikistan are being more bolshy to Putin right now than Ukraine was being in 2013.
Between 2008 and 2013 Russia waged fuel blackmail on Eastern Europe, conducted cyber warfare in the Baltic, blackmailed senior officials in Ukraine and other border countries, engaged in serial election interference, flooded the region with agents provocateur, attempted to assassinate a Ukrainian presidential candidate during elections, invaded Georgia, and forced Yanukovych into signing away his country’s sovereignty on December 17th 2013.
And they’re suspected of responsibility for a plane crash that took out several Polish political and diplomatic figures.
Maidan happened because of those actions, not because of western schmoozing. Yanukovych becoming Putin’s bitch against the Ukrainian constitution and in direct opposition to his own mandate and oath of office was the final straw.

Funny thing, the ethnic Russian areas that Russia has now taken over constitute 20% of the land area of the place, but more like 95% of the GDP... That tells me that the native hoho-speaking hohos do not have much to recommend them. Kind of like our own demokkkrats...
