I was an involuntary member of an urban teachers’ union for decades. These unions are corrupt, and they are run by entrenched hard-core leftists.
But it’s worth noting that unions have nothing to do with what’s being taught in the schools. Administrators do not ask union officials for curriculum advice. It’s just not done.
Nevertheless, something is very wrong with what’s being taught. The change in my school district occurred around the year 2000. Before then, teacher committees picked the curriculum. By and large, we picked sensible stuff.
Then things changed. No more teacher committees. University consultants were hired to write the courses of study. Those pinheads wrote courses that were both woke and unworkable.
We teachers hated that. But follow the new curriculum or get fired. Many of us (including me) chose a third option: pretend to follow the curriculum and hope not to get caught.
