How austerity is pushing Europe to extremism

The far-left and the far-right have been on the rise in Europe since the Great Recession of 2008. Much has been blamed for this.

Growth has been sluggish in the EU since the crisis. Globalisation and free trade have made life less secure for both the working and middle classes.

It's not just the austerity: normally, any "austerity" in government spending would allow the private economy to recover. But in Europe as in the US, "recovery" has meant more outsourcing of production to China (and in Europe, to the eastern Europeans) and more "insourcing" to low-wage immigrants.

This, of course, stiffs the native population, and the anti-immigrant sentiment that arises is why the "right" wing instead of he left gets the extra support.
