In return for providing aid or security guarantees/umbrellas to those allies the U.S gets bases, ports, overflight rights. A whole lot of stuff that for now keeps the U.S insulated from war at home.

Peaceful republics, those who don't meddle in the affairs of foreign nations, don't need overseas bases or alliances. It's sufficient to protect our borders.
Only empires need bases and alliances.
If the far weaker Switzerland can remain neutral, without overseas bases and military alliances, a nuclear U.S. can certainly pursue that model.
