Aren’t gag orders supposed to protect the accused, not the prosecution?

I agree that if the accused violates the gag order (thereby tainting the jury pool), the prosecution should be able to retaliate in like manner.

How about the prosecutor leaking information to the media to taint the jury pool?

I don’t think that is true. I think the purpose is usually to prevent the parties from trying their case in public.
