Californian's will soon be sitting in the dark each night as they try to figure out how to cook a meal over candle-light. Gasoline powered generators are pretty much outlawed for the little guy so that will not be a alternative.

Another factor not mentioned here is that the greater the percentage of highly variable generation (wind), the more difficult it becomes to maintain steady voltage on the system. At some point, it becomes literally impossible.
Very the voltage too much, and you ruin a lot of your customers electronic devices, and disrupt critical and dangerous industrial processes.
People have no idea how complicated maintaining that balance is.

California’s buildout of wind and solar farms is exceeding the ability of its grid to handle.
That doesn’t sound right a few years ago a news story complained that California gave Arizona the power they couldn’t handle and had to buy it back from Arizona as needed.
