For some, they may wish to escape living within a Caste System, where the economic status of your parents, or lack thereof, can limit career and housing choices.
Officially, that Caste System has been abolished, along with the groom being able to demand a Dowry(money or property) for marrying someone’s daughter. but both these traditions continue unofficially.
