But don’t we need them for “picking season”?

May be true in today's environment but wasn't the case when
this part of the world was being formed. The occupants went
abroad and brought in others to do the manual/grunt work such
as planting, harvesting, preparing next season. It went on and on
until mechanization came into be a part of the every day processes.
Then all these people as manual laborers weren't needed. Now the
workers and buyers have to provide income for them as their labor
is longer needed. Mechanization and computers have eliminated a
lot of former labor needs.
The real question becomes what are all these people going to do as
things keep change in the future as the world moves on.
