When I read about him hearing voices, I thought maybe he was being treated for schizophrenia, never mind the hearing aid story-auditory and/or visual hallucinations are common with that particular mental disorder-and those people can be very, very dangerous.
Those who showed really paranoid and violent tendencies used to be pretty much permanently in residence at mental institutions, only visiting family for a few days, under supervision, medicated and where anything that can be a weapon is locked up. It is a terrible mental illness, there is no cure, but now that there are no institutions, those people are out and about-and this carnage is the result of our misplaced kindness...

I've attended some presentations on mental health, and the most frequent hallucination befalling schizophrenics is auditory (voices). And, the voices are rarely kind or friendly.
I strongly suspect that it would be in violation of several laws for such an individual to obtains or possess firearms.
Not misplaced kindness..taxpaers wont pay for long term care
