Beshear, Cameron spar over future of planned battery plant

FRANKFORT, Ky. (KT) – Gov. Andy Beshear took to social media on Friday to respond to news reports that production at one of two electric vehicle (EV) battery plants planned for Hardin County has been delayed because of concerns about demand.

The plants are being built by BlueOval SK, a joint venture between Ford Motor Co. and South Korean partner SK Innovation.

“First, the full project is still on. Construction is continuing on both of those battery plants,” said Beshear in a video posted on social media. “The two biggest battery plants on planet Earth and all of the hundreds and hundreds of construction jobs are still there. Those folks are still earning a great living.”

Beshear said the first battery plant is going to open and operate on the current schedule. “My understanding is the second battery plant, which isn’t scheduled to open until 2026, Ford is looking at the operational schedule of that plant, and looking to be a little bit flexible, depending on the demand for EVs in the market.”

Republican Attorney General Daniel Cameron, who is looking to unseat Beshear, criticized the governor on social media. “We aren’t becoming the battery capital of the world. We are becoming the failed promises capital of the world,” said Cameron. “Another Beshear promise is unraveling.”

In the video, Beshear pushed back.

Beshear has really been hanging his hat on this battery plant as a campaign platform and getting grants to set up EV charging stations. The farce that this is is now becoming unraveled...but doubtful the press will spend any significant time calling Beshear out for this when the signs were clear for some time.

The viability of EVs in the long term has probably actually been hindered by all of these subsidies vs. allowing the market and technology to develop to become more efficient and reach economies of scale. The subsidies are pushing junk out onto the market.

Well maybe it can be used as a warehouse / distribution center if the EV market craters completely.

Right now you might invest in EV manufacturing with cash you don’t mind losing. Demand is flat and likely to succumb to market forces.

Or the whole EV house of cards is crumbling.

Can you say Toxic Heavy Metal Salts? That’s what these batteries are made from. And, that is what will end up contaminating this future superfund sight.

Only HUGE factories, using HUGE amounts of resources and land, can save the planet...
