How to cope when your values clash with your co-workers'
Science Daily ^

In our increasingly polarized society, more people may find themselves in a workplace where they are one of the few conservatives or few liberals around.

A new study found that those whose values -- political or otherwise -- don't match the majority in their organization felt they received less respect and as a result were less engaged at work. Moreover, their co-workers noticed their lack of engagement.

"It is a real issue that organizations face," said Tracy Dumas, lead author of the study and associate professor of management and human resources at The Ohio State University's Fisher College of Business.

"Organizations know that it is valuable to have employees with different perspectives. But if those with different perspectives feel they aren't respected and so aren't fully participating in their jobs, organizations aren't fully reaping the benefits of their unique perspectives."

But the study did find a way that "value minorities" could feel more a part of their teams: by disclosing personal information about themselves to their colleagues that had nothing to do with the values about which they disagreed.

The study was published recently in the journal Organization Science.

"Value minorities" were defined as those whose core beliefs involving politics, religion or other important areas of life clash with the majority of people in their organizations.

You can’t even use a styrofoam coffee cup from the company coffee station without feeling like somebody’s watching what you do with it. Same thing with push-pins, paper clips and rubber bands. Don’t even think about waning pads of Post-It notes, spring clips and discarded blank sheets of copy paper. They’ll fall all over themselves just to score a few points with Management, and they know how badly they need those points because they have an excessive need for help on the job.

We live in a world where all social aspects of work life have to be eliminated. At work you are a work robot. Nothing more.

In my 60+ years in the employment world I have not seen much change:

Immediated Gratification is the biggest change. Pre-1965 Delayd Graticification dominated. We sand We shall Overcome.
I returned from Vietnam. In 1968 we were chating When do we want it? We want it now!

Birth Control made the difference.

Individuaism v Collectivism is the 2d biggest change. There has always been a mix of Personal Responsibility and collect responsibility of the voluntary group of family, church, social club, etc. And involuntary responsibility of the local government, state government and national government. Individualism has declined. Voluntary responsibilith has declined. Mandatory responsibility has increased.

These two changes in the culture have changed the workplace. But the change is in the cutlure. The workplace reflects the culture.

The bottom line still matters and that’s all Wall Street cares about, ESG crap be damned.

It’s ironic that the insane left is telling black and other minority kids you don’t need to work hard, don’t need to show up on time (or at all), don’t have to get correct answers in math, don’t have to speak good English, don’t have to look and sound professional, don’t have to be polite, don’t have to care about meeting others’ needs. No, those are oppressive, colonialist, white attributes and you don’t want to be THAT, do you?

Yet the high performance you expect at work depends on those attributes. The success and longevity of any firm depends on those attributes. The financial rewards of a high stock price depends on those attributes. Your paycheck depends on those attributes.

Yet the left teaches blacks and POCs to fail. Of course, then they can scream RACISM and OPPRESSION even louder.

“different perspectives” is commie trash code for “all perspectives/cultures are of equal value”.

No.

Every group has a continuum of values, a distribution. But, that does not mean that the nutjobs on either end are acceptable. Shun them. Shame them. Avoid them.

The four of you did a great job here with your common sense replies.

Go to work and leave the politics/religion at home.

“For 20 years I worked at a univ. I would not have got very far, if I didn’t just keep my mouth shut.”

“I endured THAT form of terrorism.”

After my early retirement, your reply/post is the reason why I turned job offers from local and nearby, junior colleges, with the radical libs pretending to be professors.

I don’t discuss these things at work:

1. POLITICS

2. RELIGION

3. SPORTS

4. SEX

5. WEATHER......................

I would also add to not discuss any of your own personal business. My coworkers did not know a thing about me.

They are insufferable.

And... because they don’t get any ‘discussion’ from their oppsition, they actually THINK they have a majority.

That was so plain when ‘Tonka Thighs’ Hillary lost and couldn’t understand WHY. She didn’t appreciate the level of opposition she actually was facing. ‘’If I don’t hear them... they don’t exist’! MORON!!

This all started around 2000.
In the private sector, conservatives quickly learned to shut up or get fired.
Liberals could say anything they wanted.
Now 20 years later, its everywhere.

Imagine another 20 years....

20 years ago, was when I took a very generous early retirement package.

George 76 and I have joked about others getting fired and getting a Kinko’s box to take their personal stuff after being fired.

Those who didn’t take the offer and worked in the home office were given a Kinko’s box to put their belongings in.

Then they were escorted out and off the property. Their vehicles were brought to them outside the office building.
Local cops were there and asked the new unemployed to go home.

Sales reps and managers were fired in luggage centers at
airports.

A sister company met their field sales people in the country at non busy intersections and fired them and sent them home in a cab.

One guy got a heads’ up and had relatives with guns on the tops of their personal vehicles at the firing intersections. Fortunately no one was shot.

“Good times”

Not for those who got a Kinko’s box.
