Israel was on high Yom Kippur military alert for three weeks before the attack, which came in the fourth week, and two weeks after Yom Kippur.
The Hamas military assault made no sense - which is why it briefly succeeded.
No one knew that Hamas had 2,000 amphetamine fueled Suicide Soldiers.
The Suicide Soldiers invaded at seven points. They advanced one mile or less at three points. Their deepest penetration was less than four miles, against the softest target, the music festival, where at least half of the land invasion deaths, and hostage taking, took place.
Within 24 hours, the Israeli military killed 1,500 of the 2,000 Suicide Soldiers.
Most of the survivors returned to Gaza with hostages.
ALL of the Hamas Suicide unit commanders NEVER left Gaza.

The present war started by HAMAS, is the 3rd of their wars against Israel since 2007.
The 1st war, was in July-August 2014. The 2nd war, was in May 2021. BUT, most of the world did not notice those wars, in contrast to the present 3rd war, because HAMAS did not slaughter so many Jews and other people during the 1st and 2nd wars, as HAMAS slaughtered - beginning on Saturday, October 7, 2023.
Then, the attacks by HAMAS, beginning with several rocket, multi-launch systems in action, overnight from October 6th, were the start of a complex assault plan for which HAMAS had been training for 2 years.
Israel expected HAMAS to be planning and training, but Israel did not know: a) information that it could not, and b) information withheld.
Israel did have some troops in the large area around most of the Gaza Strip, plus some police. (Police were present at the party that HAMAS para-forces attacked.) Most of those forces had limited ammunition. HAMAS knew where almost all of the supplies were stored and attacked almost every one of such targets that it had identified. Several Israeli police and some IDF troops died, after exhausting the ammunition that they had with them, personally.
The Israeli Navy was immediately involved, at the start of the HAMAS attack. HAMAS had dozens of its own naval commandos who exited from undersea tunnels and from boats, and they attempted to get to different beachheads, up the Mediterranean coastline, north of the Gaza Strip. The Israeli Navy destroyed such attempts by HAMAS.
The "allowed" opportunities for HAMAS, are speculation. Possibly Israel was betrayed by left-wing supporters and sympathizers who are HAMAS (et al) protagonists, aka apologists for Islamic terrorism. And, there may be gaps where Israeli intel - in hindsight - will now be found kicking itself -AND ALSO- kicking whomever Israel had thought to be reliable.
I do suspect, that some of the large, U.S. military support showing up in and around Israel, has - among several purposes - one in particular: Attempt to make up for some mistakes made by U.S. Defense Dept. braggards and/or DoD and State Dept. socialists against Israel.
There are so many socialists in the west, in the "liberal" media, in academia, who loathe Israel and/or loathe conservative and patriotic Jews.
The essence of socialism, is betrayal and theft, and sometimes rape, pillage, and burn. But of course, in print by the marketers of socialism: "In the name of humanity."
