Polling at the time showed that overwhelmingly the population supported him.
But the people don’t decide. Elites decide.
If the Elites are unanimous, they control all the insitutions and they can overwhelm the popular will.
It happened in Britain with mass foreign “diversity” immigration.
Elites only lose to the people when they foolishly try to validate their garbage by holding referendums.
Then they get fooled by their push polls, and lose the campaign, eg: Charlottetown, Maastrich, Brexit, Voice... etc.
